World Organisation for Early Childhood Education


An international non-government organisation founded in 1948 to benefit children under eight years of age throughout the world.

OMEP is an international, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1948 to benefit children under the age of 8 years throughout the world.

OMEP is currently active in 70 countries and co-operates with other international organisations with similar aims.

OMEP has consultative status with, and is represented world-wide at, the meetings of UNESCO, UNICEF, and other international organisations.

OMEP's Aims and Objectives
OMEP's aim is to promote the optimum conditions for all children, in order to ensure their well-being, development and happiness, both within their family unit and the wider communities in which they live.

OMEP assists in undertakings that have the objective of improving the early childhood education and care in its broadest interpretation.

The organisation is founded on, and will continue to have a commitment to education for peace. It also continues to champion children's rights under the UN Convention.

OMEP supports scientific research that positively influences the conditions in which children live, grow and develop.

OMEP Organisation
The World Council is the decision making body, comprised of the World President, its Executive Committee and the Presidents of National Committees.

The Executive Committee of the World Council is the administrative body, consisting of the World President, World Treasurer, and Vice-Presidents representing five regions (Africa, Asia & the Pacific, Central & South America, Europe, North America & the Caribbean).

Since 1948, a World Congress has been held every three years in one of the member countries. The XXIV World Congress of OMEP will be held in Melbourne Australia 21-24 July 2004. Presentations, paper and research reports from many countries are given at the World Congress.

Membership
As a world-wide organisation, OMEP relies on the support of its members. Membership is open to professionals from any discipline that is interested in the well-being of children and their families, parents, administrators or politicians.

No person or interested group is excluded by reason of race, creed or political opinion. Within each participating country, membership may consist of individuals and groups who subscribe to the aims of the organisation.
